I find the physical act of car shopping repulsive

Another Vanden Plas got it’s bell rung. That’s th ree totaled cars in three years, and this time the payout isn’t enough to fix the car.

Today is round one of car shopping. Of course, my father wants to finally get his XJR and my mother, concerned with the budgetary restrictions of a lower payout than expected, says we need to broaden what we’re looking at.

A smattering from today’s agenda:

Lots of nice Jags around DC at nice prices, though they either tend to be babied or need lots of work. Thankfully both are priced similarly, but I’d look at a couple.

That era of XJ was pretty nice save for air suspension issues, but it’s going to be a lot more reliable and parts a lot cheaper than a comparable 7 series or Phaeton.  Plus Jaaaaaaag.

Get a high end Kia or Hyundai and stop buying vacation houses for your local service department

This may be the first time anybody has ever suggested cross shopping the X-Type with the XJ.

Three totaled in three years? I’ve totaled one in thirty!

But my local service department is an independent fellow named Toby with a penchant for British Leyland products...

Try to get them to look at a Kia Stinger. Still quite novel.

We’ve never actually had to replace any air suspension over our 2 X350s in a combined 110,000 miles of service. Eventually we start getting an intermittent air suspension fault for repressurization time length, but never a failure.

And I don’t know if we’ll actually be buying anything but a Jaguar. My dad knows the XJ, and to his point they are usually quite reliable. A damn sight more than my V12 S-Class at any rate...

My mom likes a Bentley Continental Flying Spur. The Phaeton would be, obviously, a good middle ground on that point.

We’ve been very unlucky...

Plus totals are inevitable on these old luxo-barges once new, OEM parts prices start getting thrown around.

Wrong Jaguar. Correct Jaguar:

Jeremy Clarkson is a cockend, but this is Top Gear at its absolute finest.

Waaaaaaaay out of our price bracket.

I can’t believe an original 2009 Genesis 4.6 Sedan is still a $10,000+ proposition with less than 150k miles.

Yeah other than that, which parts are cheap for if you know where to look, they’re robust.

Honestly that era of XJR is awfully pretty - especially when nice ones are 5-7K.

interestingly I saw a nice silver XJR in our work garage just this last week - it was especially memorable because it had a tow hitch on the back with one of those Yosemite  S am “Back Off!” hitch plug things.

Seems like most of the other options would be more expensive, and certainly more hassle, than just get ting an XJR. I vote XJR - preferably in black.

Well, you do get all the experience of owning a Bentley - expensive repair bills, frequent shop visits - with the Phaeton... I’d still take the Jaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaag.

Are XFs in your price range? Not as potent and fawnceh as the XJs, perhaps, but quite nice and pleasantly modern.

Sorry have to post this whenever possible. I’ve logged about 6000 miles in this since buying it last fall. Only breakdowns have been because of 30 year old hoses. Will probably pass 100k this winter.

We've decided after today that our #1 choice is a 2005 XJR in Maryland, as a matter of fact.

That’s kind of the thing...we like Jags because of the quad headlamps. The quads are timeless. The quads cause angry women at the laundromat to think you OWN the laundromat. The valet leaves it up front with the Porsches and the one guy there that night with his Ferrari. The quad lamps fool any laymen into thinking the big cat is newer than it actually is.

The XF and the new XJ just...blend into the crowd. But our old XJ and S-Type still carry their latent, aristocratic air. If we can avoid wrecking this new one for 100,000 miles, I doubt we'll be buying another.
